A long time ago, like during the Jurassic, I took a class with a Professor who could prove the Existence of God by applying, of all things, Thermodynamic Equations.

The First Law of Thermodynamics holds that there is Conservation of Energy; it can neither be Created nor Destroyed, only Converted from one form to another. The Second Law of Thermodynamics, while not violating the First Law, holds that Entropy always Increases, such that the amount of usable energy in a system dissipates over time. The Second Law is a unique law of physics in that it deals with Time and its Direction. The Third Law of Thermodynamics states that as a system approaches Absolute Zero the Entropy of the System approaches a well-defined Minimum (a Constant, but not Zero). {Absolute Zero, the thermodynamic null point, is the point at which atoms transmit no thermal energy, or are completely at rest and cannot get any colder. This is defined as 0 K, where K is the thermodynamic absolute temperature Kelvin scale.}

APageInTheLife deals with selected topics, but the main idea behind almost every post has to do with Language and Meaning (and of course, God), so it would not be surprising to find that Thermodynamics also drives or applies to Linguistics.

In a recent paper Nature, Evolution, Culture, Free will and Morals: A Thermodynamic Singularity, Charles H.M. Beck, Professor Emiretus Dept. of Psychology, University of Alberta- Edmonton, Canada writes:

"Human cultural activity in the form of artistic
expression and aesthetic appreciation may be viewed as manifestations
of the Second Law. The evolution of human
language provided a basis for the accumulation, storage and transmission
of information and is widely regarded as a key element in the
development of human culture.

The concept of the transformation of energy has been successfully
applied to linguistic communication. Art forms, encapsulated
universally in ritualized communal celebrations involving decoration,
storytelling, music, dance/drama performance, and feasting,
serve to increase the rate of energy transfer in human groups
compared to the group member working individually.

....To sum up, salient features of human culture
including language, artistic expression and appreciation,
spiritual experiences and life satisfaction may be seen as a manifestations of effective energy transformation."

What does this preamble about linguistics, thermodynamics, and God have to do with the subject of this post, Water, you might wonder?

It leads us to Question how we can be in any position to Say anything about God, when we don't even have a very good understanding about the most abundant substance found on Earth--Water (H20).
Since the late 1940's scientists, either through simulations or experiments, have noticed that bulk water, when supercooled below its melting temperature (TM) at about 235 K (below which it crystallizes), approaches a Thermodynamic Singularity (TS) at 228K. It is during its supercooled metastable state that the anomalies in water's thermodynamic properties become pronounced, showing a power law divergence toward the singular temperature 228 K.

Now, we don't have to cool water down that far to observe 'anomolous' behavior, since we are all familiar with its other 'anomalous property' of becoming less dense, not more, when it is cooled down to its solid form, ice. Water expands to occupy 9% more volume as ice, which is why ice floats on liquid water.

But what is remarkable at this critical triple point, 228 K, is that supercooled metastable water undergoes large structural fluctuations and fragile-to-strong dynamic cross-over (FST). The fragile-to-strong dynamic transition (FST) of bulk liquid water at about 228 K results from the structure change at the thermodynamic liquid-liquid phase transition from normal H2O to strongly tetrahedral H2O.

وَالْمُطَلَّقَاتُ يَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِأَنفُسِهِنَّ ثَلاَثَةَ قُرُوَءٍ
وَلاَ يَحِلُّ لَهُنَّ أَن يَكْتُمْنَ مَا خَلَقَ اللّهُ فِي أَرْحَامِهِنَّ
إِن كُنَّ يُؤْمِنَّ بِاللّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ

Seemingly, Sign 2:228 deals with family law in that it mentions divorcing women, while awaiting a divorce, are expected to يَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِأَنفُسِهِنَّ 'lie in wait' for 3 periods (3 menstrual cylces) prior to finalizing the divorce in the event that the woman may be carrying a viable pregnancy, in which case the couple should wait until the child is born and the pregancy should not be concealed just to get on with the divorce. If she decides she wants a reconciliation, it is expected that she and her husband work things out, but while both the man and the woman have the same rights in finalizing the divorce, the man is said to have "a precedent," in the matter; literally stated وَلِلرِّجَالِ عَلَيْهِنَّ دَرَجَةٌ as "a degree above her (the devorcee/not women in general)" (which brings us back to cooking, but not so fast).

But, if family issues are not a concern for the rest of us, Sign 2:228 is still germane to our experience here on Earth; because let's face it, not everything on Earth has to be about men and women and their relationships; there is a whole bunch of other stuff out there--like Water. And Sign 2:228, while on the surface is setting out procedures during divorce, is simultaneously propounding everything to do with metastable water and its supercooled anomolies at 228 K, by specifically mentioning مُطَلَّقَاتُ 'absolute', بِرَدِّ 'chillness/coldness/refrigeration,' ثَلاَثَةَ قُرُوَءٍ 'triple point/period', أَرْحَامِهِنَّ 'matrices' and a host of other terms connected with metastable H2O under investigation in confined spaces such as nano pores,* including that during certain simulations the number of successful molecular transfers for liquid-liquid equilibrium at this thermodynamic singularity (228 K) is about 2 N whereas it is at least 10 N or greater at higher temperatures for liquid-vapor equilibrium (N is the total number of molecules in the simulation; for liquid-vapor and liquid-liquid equilibrium in the cited reference, N was 850 and 1600, respectively).

With this approach, Sign 2:228 may be understood in a less anthropologic standpoint. For instance, the word مُطَلَّقَاتُ with a primary meaning 'divorcees' or 'females about to have a marriage annulled or get absolutely/completely seperated/detached/distanced/liberated/freed from an existing relationship/connection' may lead to the consideration that 'female' in engineering terms describes a part that has a recess, designed to receive a corresponding projecting part; and in botany the 'female' is the part of the flower that has carpels and no stamens, and produces seeds.


The words 'divorce' and 'absoluteness' are related in that the Latin 'absolutum' means 'loosened from' or 'seperated,' and this is an important connection to make since in mathematical logic the word مُطَلَّقَاتُ , in addition to meaning 'absolute', also means 'complete' such that what is being discussed is not 'partial absoluteness' in a mathematical sense. And while something is said to be absolute if it has the same truth value in each of some class of structures (or models; where structure consists of a set along with a collection of finitary functions and relations which are defined on it), the many meanings of the word مُطَلَّقَاتُ (mutliqat) also include: unbounded, unconditional and infinite. And it is the word 'infinite' which points to the special 'infinatiry" case usually found in "the logic proposed for quantum mechanics, which depending on the use of subspaces of Hilbert space as propositions, operations such as taking the intersection of subspaces are used," since in general this fails as a finitary operation.

Having described these 'divorcees' as 'recessed' particles (holes?) in this manner/matter, Sign 2:228 proscribes that they ' يَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِأَنفُسِهِنَّ ' (yatarbssna bianfusihin), which literally means 'sneak/lurk by/within themselves.' Taken in context, the meaning is clearly that they 'lie in waiting by themselves' or have no 'intercourse/contact/communication' for a 3-month period prior to 'divorcing'.

The root word 'tarbas' also means 'thrips' which is a very small insect, one of whose defining characteristics is that it is very small and likes to hide in confined spaces, making it very difficult to detect. So, this can also be understood as a defining characteristic of the subject here.

It is interesting to note that another meaning to the word yatarbas is 'ambush' which points to a property of a 'surprise attack' or 'trap unexpectedly' as well as to 'enmesh' or 'entangle.' That they 'yatarbassn bianfusihn' is reflexive, which means that they 'conceal themselves.'

So, moving right along, the alotted time for this type of 'furtive' behavior concerning 'divorcing women' is 3-menstrual cycles. For the non-anthropologic counterpart discussed here, it is to be '3-periods' or cycles. That menstruation is mentioned with the deliberate use of the word ' قُرُوَءٍ' (quruwatin) is intriguing since a 'period' not only pertains to 'time' and a 'cycle' or 'phase,' but menstruation is very much tied in with the 'lunar orbit'. This indicates that a physical entity is going around a center, much like the Moon orbits the Earth, experiencing regular displacement and not just that of it being a time cycle as would be expected in, say, a sine function.

Knowing that the Moon is strongly associated with tides, what's being described here is also related to tidal effects. Tides can be described very effectively using gravitational forces and friction, and tidal levels may be successfully forecast using chaos theory (local models).

وَلاَ يَحِلُّ لَهُنَّ أَن يَكْتُمْنَ مَا خَلَقَ اللّهُ فِي أَرْحَامِهِنَّ

اللّهُ Allah; to handle whatever math this is all about should be taken to mean the Most Dominant/Leading/Forceful thing under considertion
أَرْحَامِهِنَّ lit. 'wombs'; also means 'their ties of kinship/relationships'; and Matrix/pl. Matrices

the 'male' counterpart/dual to the 'female' behavior:

and (to) the males... a 'degree' over/above to them(selves) {what many claim to say "and the men/males" is clearly annunciated as "and to the men/males", meaning that they are being proferred or given something by the 'female' dyad; and دَرَجَةٌ darjatan in the arithmatic context means 'coefficient' 'level/echelon' 'step', lit. 'a bump/kick up' etc., which seems to indicate that this activity leads to raising the 'male' a step/quantum up to the 'female' level that had been established when the matter under consideration 'restructured' or 'reformed'...} This begs the question, 'Is there a Mathematician in the House?'

And I'm almost certain the lesson is not lost on physicists working with condensed matter, since the male/female mentioned throughtout 2:228, while indexed to water's supercooled liquid-liquid equilibrium at 228k, behave like 'excitons' in other systems which at low temperature and low pressure have anticorellated entropy and specific volume fluctuations, like semiconductors SiO2 and GeO2, and other tetrahedrally-coordinated liquids.

In conclusion, the Attributes of the 'Most Dominant Force (Allah)' mentioned here are:

'hakim' and '3aziz' which indicate that It Reinforces (Boosts) Discreetly (in a Subtle/Judicious way).

Sage words coming from a thoughtful poet known for his 'telling last line.'

The intimacy one senses in Frost's poems derives from his ability to encapsulate profound Truths about our world in a language accessible to the rest of us.

Consider the last lines from some of his poems:

1. Desert Places..."I have it in me so much nearer home To scare myself with my own desert places."
2. Hyla Brook..."We love the things we love for what they are."
3. Nothing Gold Can Stay..."So dawn goes down to day, Nothing gold can stay."
4. Revelation..."So all who hide too well away Must speak and tell us where they are."
5. The Road Not Taken ..."And that has made all the difference. "

Such keen observations could only be so well articulated by someone living very much in their present moment. Unlike some of us who are always looking back over what has happened or counting the days to see what will happen next--a sure recipe to miss what is going on right now.
A good ferinstance would be considering the simple case of 2 numbers; say, 9 and 118. Not particularly exciting numbers, and certaintly no readily discernable way to win the lottery, but here we are on September 16, 2010 thinking about them.
The Sign 9:118 given by these 2 numbers is found in Chapter 9 of the Quran, entitled Repentence.
Surah 9 Tawba (Repentence)وَعَلَى الثَّلاَثَةِ الَّذِينَ خُلِّفُواْ
حَتَّى إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ
وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَظَنُّواْ
أَن لاَّ مَلْجَأَ مِنَ اللّهِ إِلاَّ إِلَيْهِ
ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُواْ
إِنَّ اللّهَ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ 9:118
We could try to find special relationships between the numbers 9 and 118 by using simple arithmetic operations and trigonometric functions; treat them as coordinates to find a location on earth or the celestial sphere; or convert them to different forms such as binary, hex or complex. Or, we can choose to look at this pair of numbers in terms of a common relationship we know they share today, in 2010 CE.
As of 2010, the Periodic Table contains 118 chemical elements whose discoveries have been confirmed. Ninety-four are found naturally on Earth, and the rest have been produced artificially in particle accelerators.
The'Periodic Table' is referred to as such since the elements are arranged according to their chemical properties which occur 'periodically' when these elements are grouped depending on the number of valence electrons and the total number of electron shells.
The 'periods' comprise the horizontal rows of the table, of which there are 9. (The wide table incorporates the lanthenides and actenides (f-block) and the extended version adds the 8th and 9th periods, incorporating the f-block and adding the theoretical g-block.)
So, in today's parlance the numbers 9 and 118 are associated with the Periodic Table as we know it at present having 118 confirmed elements and 9 periods.
Sign 9:118, Reaveled over 1400 years ago, relates the story about 3 Believers who were 'left behind' or stayed behind rather than join in a battle with the Prophet for reasons that were not immediately known to be valid. And it basically refers to their experience of feeling that their world (the Earth) felt constraining to them (they felt hemmed in) regardless of its expanse until they came to realize that there is really no place of sanctuary for them except in turning to God; a hard-won lesson in knowing that it is God who Causes or Teaches us Repentence as a Mercy from Him.
Well, what does this all have to do with today and the Periodic Table of the Elements?
Sign 9:118 appears to have everything to do with atoms and their finer parts and their motions: as given here in a nutshell--or a quantum well, as the case may be.
وَعَلَى الثَّلاَثَةِ الَّذِينَ خُلِّفُواْ
And (regarding, about) the the curvature/fundamental/effervescent of the Three that succeed/descendants that displace/supersede/in the wake of/subsequent to/as a result
حَتَّى إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ
even/if (while/as long as) tightens/bottlenecks/limits/narrows/strait=narrow channel connecting two larger bodies to them the Earth/ground/third planet from the Sun/ on them matter concerning/Earth/ground Including/with its capaciousness/spaciousness/vastness
{In terms of physics (or matter) properties, such as phase changes, are associated with the Three universality classes; relevant, irrelevant or marginal. And these properties depend on parameters, or ‘curvatures’ , as a second derivative of the energy, that are of direct physical importance. This statement is based on the first line of Sign 9:118 as it states that the subject is about or 'pertaining' to the 'fundamental' + 'curvature' + 'effervescent ==liveliness which is related to 'energy'' of the '3 descendents' or 'three derivatives' that 'result' or 'succeed/supplant/take place' from the following conditions in the next line(s): 'while' or 'even' as it seems to them that they have a limitation or a 'bottleneck' described as a 'narrow/strait' of the 'earth' which would imply their 'ground state' or the 'ground' itself appears to be a limitation or a narrow channel connecting two larger bodies (much like a quantum well) despite or 'including' all its 'capaciousness' or ability to' hold/store a vast amount'.}

Note: Things to keep in mind: “The curvature distributions
may find direct applications in the discription of fluctuations of
magnetic (such as diamagnetic susceptibility) or temperature (ie. heat capacity) properties in mesoscopic quantum systems or random media.” (Zakrzewski & Delande, 1993); in terms of
chemistry efferescense is the result of the chemical reaction occurring
in the liquid which causes gas bubbles to escape, typically seen in carbonated
soft drinks; and the historical name for the f atomic subshell is 'fundamental'.

and tightens/bottlenecks/limits/narrows/strait=narrow channel connecting two larger bodies to them on themselves matter/concern=disquiet/fluctuation/wavering/uncertainty/earth/ground and the feel/ imagine/picture/sense/work out a sound like a rustle/murmur (phonon)/ complain
أَن لاَّ مَلْجَأَ
there is no Harbor Burrow/small place created by digging or tunneling/earth Hideout Hideaway Sanctum==quiet place/calm or motionless place
{And they themselves (implies that something within them) cause a tightening or narrowing much like the narrow/straits they encounter from the 'ground' (like the quantum well described above); but here, the 'matter' 'fluctuates' or 'wavers' (implies dual nature, or particle/wave) in their own 'ground' state and they 'sense' or perceive a 'rustle', which can mean one of two things; they either react to a 'murmur' or sound wave or they produce it themselves, much like a phonon is thought to act. That there is no 'sanctuary' or 'harbor', a place of 'calm' or to be 'motionless' in a 'small place created by tunneling/digging'. A tertiary meaning to malja is also 'earth' or 'ground', so the idea here is that they perceive there is no way to get to a 'ground state;' and motionless would imply 'zero energy' by 'tunneling'.}
مِنَ اللّهِ إِلاَّ إِلَيْهِ
From God except In Him (to Him) to matter/instability/ebb and flow/rise and fall/fluctuate/change/oscillation/vacillation==uncertainty/wavering/of two minds/irresolute/undetermined/be hesitant
ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُواْ
then, after He forgives/discharged/absolve/released/freed them of matter/
disquiet/disorder/unrest/chaos/disorder/disarray/so that they 'repent'= to repent== change ways or habits, adj.-grow or lie along/in the direction of the ground (mature on Earth)
{From God except in Him (to Him); where 'him' means 'matter' or 'concern', 'rise and fall' or 'ebb and flow', like a 'fluctuation/change/oscillation', again, an allusion to 'wavering' between 'two states', being 'undetermined', 'uncertain;' and further to this 'hesitant'. Then, or consequently, He 'freed them of matter/concern' or 'released' them from the 'uncertain' or 'indeterminate' state (of 'chaos', 'disorder', 'disquiet'='noise' or phonon) they are in so that they 'repent'.
In religious terms to 'repent' means to change one's ways or habits, but in real-world terms to 'repent' means to grow or lie along or in the direction of the ground. A change in 'ways' or 'direction' may mean a change in 'sign.' And that they 'li-tawbuwa' indicates that the direction in which they are 'repenting' is toward Him/God. So, in terms of 'God' being a 'Boson', it would indicate that these 'noisy' particles seek a ground (zero energy) state when in its presence or due to its presence. The mechanism by which 'God' does this is alluded to in the word 'forgives' which means to 'discharge a debt'.}

إِنَّ اللّهَ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ
The (Indeed, True) God He teaches/causes 'repentence'=change in direction (sign); to grow or lie in the direction of the ground; the 'Merciful'= one who has the capacity to forgive ==cancels/neutralizes/gives the reverse order to an obligation/debt/trespass==encroachment’==
'Beneficent'/produces benefits/advantages
'Clement'/uses little force or violence/not rising steeply/gentle slope/highest status
'Pitying'/willingness to forgive/capacity to be sympathetic
'Sympathetic' as in vibrations such as musical tones that are produced in something as a result of similar vibrations at the same frequency from something else
{The nature of how this 'God' teaches or causes 'repentence' is described further in this last line of Sign 9:118; It has 'capacitance' to 'discharge a debt' or 'cancel/neutralize' by giving the 'reverse order' to a debt or trespass (where a tresspass is an 'encroachment'). This is done with very little force/energy or violence. Its profile has a very shallow/gentle slope yet it reaches the highest status/level. 'Pitying' means a 'willingness to forgive' which implies this is done in a somewhat selective manner in that it can be done at any time that it 'opts' to do so. And 'forgiveness' is the 'capacity to be sympathetic' such that either the 'God' particle sets up a resonant frequency with the 'noisy' particle or vice versa such that the 'noisy' particle reaches a 'ground' state (as described by 'repentence' above).}
So, I hope You don't Mind my having turned You into a 'Sympathetic Boson Particle', considering that You have reduced me to an erstewhile 'noisy grounded nothing.' But this does prove the the old adage still holds True: "There is no Power (Transfer) nor Force (Vitality) nor Movement (Motion/Activity) except by/from/with God (Allah). لا حول ولا قوة ولا حركة إلا بالله"

This pretty little Jingle does not always hold true that Boys are made of such Earthly things and Girls always so Refined, but the Irony lies in that its subtext flies completely under the Radar --about forming Macromolecules--of DNA, that is.

The word مِن (pronounced 'MIN') basically means Of or From, and while I promised I would no longer use the Quran to hone my culinary technique, it does appear that on more than one and Various Occassions You Beat me to it; Precisely and Pointedly as it Pertains to what is/was involved in 'Cooking Up' a Human in the First Place (Recall that Twilight Zone episode, 'To Serve Man'?) {Note: In the selected passages the مِن 'min' appears in different colors to highlight that the diacritical marks vary, indicating a change in pronunciation, but do not appear to change the meaning when reading in context. مِّنْ is pronounced 'MMan' and مِّنَ is pronounce 'MMana' and مِنَ is pronounced 'Mina'.}

What Follows is a Synopsis of the Process based on a cursory search of the Quran relating to the topic of RNA and DNA synthesis, since there are ongoing efforts to form nucleotides in the lab that have been met with limited success in forming some but not all of the sugar-base pairs; it would be interesting to see what, if anything, is being overlooked. The understanding is that it is no easy task to get the base to 'stick' to the sugar backbone of the macromolecule.

According to 15:26 it starts with صَلْصَالٍ pronounced salsalin, clay or grit. (Watch carefully as I turn humble clay into some sort of advanced engineering material--just for your amusement).
That the word صَلْصَالٍ (salsalin) incorporates both the name of the material and one of its qualities is quite profound when you stop to think that naturally occurring clay is composed primarily of fine-grained minerals, aka grit. Clay minerals are the most abundant materials in sedimentary basins. They are responsible for imparting plasticity to the clay which cause it to harden when fired or dried.

Plasticity describes the deformation of a material undergoing non-reversible changes of shape in response to applied forces, and in biology Phenotype plasticity describes the ability of an organism to change its phenotype in response to changes in the environment. The deformation or the change of an object's shape is called strain and the force causing it is called stress.

Water may also be trapped in the mineral crystals in variable amounts and the clay may also have other organic matter which does not contribute to the clay's plasticine quality. The most common clay minerals—like kaolinite, illite, chlorite, and smectite are typically found in mudstones.

So, now we know where the Water (الْمَاء, al-ma.a) comes from that God used in Creating Everything and mentioned in Sign 25:54 And He Is Who Created from/of the Water Human Being(s)... The Word bashrin, بَشَرًا, not only means Human Being but also Walking, 'Good News', and Epidermal. Epidermal refers to the outer layer of skin, but it may also mean a more generic outer layer that functions to contain any biological form. And then He Assigned His Creation a form and Proportioned it, in other words 'Made Man as He Imagined' him.

That the human was never meant to be solitary is stipulated in that as part of his formation, in addition to having been assigned a form, he was also assigned صِهْرً 'sihrun'; meaning, He Gave him Lineage/Pedigree/Descent/Parentage/Extraction/Kinship/Kin/Derivation and Marriage Ties. And it is due to the usage of the word 'sihrun' that it is acceptable to think that it is the DNA and/or RNA material being formed in this process since these macromolecules are responsible for passing on genetic information to future generations, in other words, heredity.

The word sihrun provides evidence that this molecular formation from the clay comprises the following activities, too: Smelting/Fuze/Melt/Cast/and Melt Down.

Sign 25:54 concludes with one of God's Attributes being 'Qadir', primarily meaning 'Mighty', but other definitions include include: Capable/Predestines/Measures/Determines/Rates/Accounts/Numbers/Quantifies...
Other physical qualities attributed to the 'starter' clay is that it is مَّسْنُونٍ 'masnoonin'--that it is 'aged' from those clays that are 'serrated/poined/jagged/toothed' at some level of inspection, either macroscopic or microscopic or both. And that it is treated by حَمَإٍ 'hamaa_in' (no mother-in-law jokes, please)-- in other words, 'heated' or 'annealed' under conditions of a steady regimen of 'feeding' it a 'steady intake or diet' of something under 'protected' or 'safeguarded' conditions. Other mechanics involved in this step are 'agitation', and the allusion to 'excitement' which may refer to the heightened activity at the molecular or atomic level.

In addition to heat and temperature and mechanically moving (like stirring, agitation), the word hamma_in also means ardor or passion which is an indication that there was a great deal of attention and care given in tending to this process.

If any of these steps sound familiar, they are very much in keeping with how a Sculptor creates Ceramics or Pottery works. But, an additional nuance arising from using the word salsaln is that there is also some type of resonance in that a 'sound' much like a Jingle/Clink/Clank, typically associated with metallic noise or the sound glass makes when it it struck, is also contributing to this process (that's why Tibetan Singing Bowls were mentioned earlier).

Also, the homophone derived by substituting the letter seen for the saad in 'salsalin' means 'chain/concatenate' , which appears to indicate that at a molecular level atoms are being strung together or 'added up' to form chains.

In 18:37 we get a clue to the age-old Riddle, 'What came first, the Chicken or the Egg?'

It specifies "First, مِن 'min' from/of تُرَابٍ turabin or Earth/Soil/Dust", basically, an echo of the 'clay' and then from/of نُّطْفَةٍ 'natfatin' (a drop of) Semen or Sperm. This implies that the genetic material is created first and "then He سَوَّاكَ رَجُلًا" 'sawa.ka rajula'--"then He made you a Man". The order is clearly given as first from dust, then sperm (genetic material) and only thereafter do you become equivalent/equal (t0) a Man (Human Being).

The word turabin is used here to further characterise the clay as 'dust'; meaning that it is associated with finer particles than other materials that are produced by the weathering of rocks or stones. Clays are distinguished from other fine-grained soils by differences in size and mineralogy, and typically clays are characterized as having the smaller particle size than silts or other deposits (on the order of about 2 microns or less).

Sign 16:4 seems to be making the Observation that the undeserved consequence of all this hard work in Creating Humans is, rather than their showing Gratitude, they become openly adversarial or Contentious. And 19:67 serves to Remind us that this Act of Creation was due to having met with God's Acceptance on a Prior Occassion or From Before or Right In Front of Him, and that Humans forget that without His Doing So, we were all like Nothing or Not Anything at All. Sign 36:77 reiterates the apparent disappointment almost word-for-word as Sign 16:4.

The word رَبَتْ (rabbat) in 22:5 means 'Tied' something together or 'Tamed' it and then He أَنبَتَتْ 'anbata' , which means 'Grew' or 'Brought About' from 'Every Pair' or 'Dual' (Dyad زَوْجٍ ) Beauty بَهِيجٍ (baheejin). The word baheej also means that what is Created with these Dyads is Unstressed Convivial, Lovely, Warm, Inviting; basically Everything Good.

Now, to Tie something together means to 'attach' or 'bind' or 'knot' or 'fasten' together the Dyad (or pair under consideration), and if related to the activity that preceded this with the clay-derived molecules, it becomes clear that the 'chain' macromolecules are being joined together, much like we would expect in DNA, as an adjunct to the crystal growth taking place from 'firing' the 'clay' and/or processing it by shaping, sintering, cooling it as one would when making Pottery. (A clue as to which of the two genders came first can be ascertained by inspection. Recall that 'those fired are the men' which indicates that it is during the 'firing' of the 'clay' step in the process that the y-chromosome is formed as opposed to another step associated with pottery making, such as forming or cooling).

Sign 23:12 reinforces the 'Inheritence' aspect of this Creation, a further allusion to DNA, in that سُلَالَةٍ 'sulalitin' means a Strain/Line/Descent/Race/Progeny/ Ancestry/Geneology/Stock/Offspring/Scions/Sprigs, etc., even Blood and Parentage.

And the noun 'sallay', a variant intonation of the word 'sulalitin' means 'Baskets' or a 'Group of Similar or Related Things.' A Basket can be taken explicitly to mean a type of 'Woven Container'. And the word 'Cells' (diminutive) like saying 'littel cells' is also found in the root of this word. The Basket سُلَالَةٍ is described as being made of/from the طِينٍ 'teen' or Clay/Mud.

Mud specifies that the Clay deposits used in building these macromolecules is associated with a watery/marine environment. Clay deposits may be formed in place or transported to locations other than where the weathering/aging process occurs and they are typically associated with very low energy depositional environments such as large lakes and marine deposits, which would be consistent with using the term 'mud'. {Note that both the terms Stress and Strain are mentioned in these Signs as having to do with forming something from the 'clay' which ties in rather nicely with the plastic quality of the clay}.
To the trained eye, that we are 'Created from Dust' is not News but, on finer inspection, Sign 23:12 is describing in Great Detail what the actual physical assembly of these macromolecules looks like.

Consider that Crystal structures are 'woven' or 'cross-hatched' cell assemblies on the 'atomic level' and that Pottery making itself causes certain types of clay minerals to assemble in these types of crystaline structures. Other things to keep in mind are that Crystal size, number, and shape are determined by factors such as impurity level, mixing regime, vessel design, and cooling profile. {Note that the Created phenotypes are formed in such a manner as to be Unstressed, such that the type of molecules and/or crystals being formed are made or assembled in such a way as to have little or no stress}.

At the Atomic level, Clay minerals are hydrous aluminium phyllosilicates, sometimes with variable amounts of iron, magnesium, alkali metals, alkaline earths and other cations. Clays are fundamentally built of tetrahedral sheets and octahedral sheets; examples of clays that would consist of one tetrahedral sheet and one octahedral sheet would be kaolinite and serpentine.
Time now for the Mystical Math (because I know You're Baiting me, but I figure Granma wants to hear me 'say' it). The significant relationship between tetrahedra and octahedra in 3-Dimensional space is that the stellated octahedron is the only stellation of the octahedron and it is the simplest of five regular polyhedral compounds. It can be considered as either a polyhedron compound (combination of polyhedra) or a stellation (a stellation of a polyhedron is formed by extending all its faces until they intersect again along new edges). As a compound, it is constructed by joining two tetrahedra (a tetrahedron and its dual (dyadic) tetrahedron). So, that was the description in Words, and here it is if we draw a Picture:



This particular geometry is interesting when viewed from a certain Perspective in that a very Familiar 2-dimensional Emblem or Symbol becomes Readily Apparent.





The applicability of this 'Star of David' or 'Abraham's Shield' to All of Humanity is inherent in All of Creation and is not simply meant to Identify just one Stratum of Humanity, like being Jewish. (As an aside, the earlier discussion regarding tesselations (tessera or using non-overlapping tiles to cover a field) in combination with stellations is contributing to the field of developing electro-optical invisibility cloaks. It would be interesting to see if tesselations of the stellated octohedron produce a viable invisibility cloak).

This Fact, that Underlies Everything, is brought to the fore in 55:14 when it is mentioned that the Human Being's Creation from/of salsalin=Clay/Grit (var. chain, concatenate) is كَالْفَخَّارِ k.alfukhar--meaning, 'similar or like unto Pottery' (pottery making/device). The roots associated with the word Pottery mean Honorary, Superior, Luxuriant with a secondary meaning of it being 'wry'= dry/sardonic.

The word wry, while implying some Irony is involved, Points to the manner in which these macromolecules are concatenated when deposited along with or in these 'baskets' or crystal structures, gives them their Distinctive shape or Geometry. Since 'wry' means 'out of shape' or 'twisted to one side', indicates the process of forming these macromolecules in situ with laying down the crystal structure from the clay dictates the 'twisted' shape of the Helix or Double Helix associated with DNA and RNA molecules.

The Helix (a spun string, a screw, a propeller, etc.) and Möbius strip are chiral 2-dimensional objects in 3-dimensional ambient space. Chirality is inherent in molecules built from clays having tetrahedral and octahedral sheets, especially when one stops to consider that the stellated octahedron is a combination of a tetrahedron and its self-dual (its reflection through the origin, or mirror-image). {A similar notion of chirality is considered in knot theory}.

While Sign 32:7 may not be adding new information pertaining to the formation or the building process of living things from clay, it is included here to make a final Point. Simply stated, it says God Perfected Everything He Created أَحْسَنَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ 'ahsana kuli shyin', and then He Started Creating Humans from the طِينٍ 'muddy clay/dust.

And Sign 30:20 states in No Uncertain Terms that "Of His Signs Is (Verily/Truly) He Created You of/from Dust (Earth/Soil) and Then If (this is a Qualifier--'A Big If') you Are Human Beings, then and only then, and for as long as you remain Human Beings, You Propagated or Are Ranging Widely!

A follow-up article by the same Gabriel Falcon (CNN dated 06.15.2010) mentions that authorities are no longer simply treating the case as a missing person and have begun a criminal probe.

There is an area in Oregon closely associated with a recently endangered/extinct species of 'wire lettuce' Stephanomeria malheurensis, at one time endemic to southeastern Oregon and known for a single location in Harney County. (That's the only endangered/extinct species site I could readily come up with).

{A July 5, 2010 blurb regarding this case written by newswire staff indicates that Kyron's stepmother is "sick" and re-affirms the need to consider the "seed size" and a secondary reference to the "weight of the particles" is significant since the origin of the particles on the women of the family property near the northwest (apparently these 'particles' are not expected to be found in any amount in the Portland area/Northwest as they are limited to an area in the Southeast/opposite direction) and this means taking a second look at any seeds found in the home or someone's clothing; this supports the initial impression pertaining to the endangered species of wire lettuce with limited range in Harney County Oregon as Seeds of Stephanomeria malheurensis are about twice the size of seeds from Stephanomeria exigua ssp. coronaria (Gottlieb 1977). It may be possible that this particlular species of wire lettuce can be found at Botanical gardens as well, like the one in Portland where the seeds were first geminated when they were being re-introduced. Reality Check: Is Ellen DeGeneres sui generis when it comes to her generosity toward her mother and does Fran Drescher like to play strip poker but only rarely ever loses a garment?

It is little more than passing interest that this news story by Gabriel Falcon has a reference to Potassium (K) embedded in it, considering that Chapters mentioning Smoke (41 Fussilat and 44 Smoke) each have a verse closely associated with the properties of this element (Group I Alkali Metal); and it is quite by chance that I had started a treatise on this particular topic on June 1, 2010 and had not yet got around to publishing it here. Chapter 44 Smoke was one of the Chapters not yet cited at A Page In The Life and I was just getting around to it.

Chapter 44 derives its name from the mention of 'dukhan' which means 'smoke' in Verse 44:10. While the word 'smoke' has several connotations, the basic meaning is a 'vapor' or 'mist' or more precisely 'a cloud of fine particles suspended in gas.'

In chemistry, smoke is produced when gaseous hydrocarbons, raised to a red heat or thereabouts, are mixed with an insufficient amount of air to produce complete combustion and disengage their carbon in a fine powder, forming smoke.

44:10 Look for (watch, observe, survey, scrutinize, beware) a Day a Visible (Obvious, Apparent) Smoke Comes from the Sky.

Sign 44:10 is interesting in the use of the word تَأْتِي "ta'ti" having the root توي "tawi" which means 'comes' or 'derives' and also means 'instantaneously'; it can be understood to mean that a visible smoke comes from the sky or derives from the sky itself.

The word مُّبِينٍ 'mubeen' can mean that the smoke is visible, but also that it makes things 'apparent' or 'elucidates'. In addition, the interstitial nature of this smoke is alluded to in the root of the word 'mubeen' which is 'beyn', meaning 'between' or 'midst'.

Depending on which form of the word mubeen is intended in Sign 44:10, (whether noun, verb, adjective, adverb, or preposition), the Sign conveys various meanings, among them that the smoke is derived from the sky itself or just comes from the direction of the sky and is sandwiched between other things (between or among something) or it links something (like layers that it is between) and/or that the smoke in some way makes things clear or reveals something as well as itself being visible.

The word 'smoke' seldom occurs in the Quran, the only other passage that I could find that pertains to the Sky and Smoke is Sign 41:11 in Surah 41 Fussilat (Criterion).

They said, "We Come (Derive) Instantaneously Obediently (Malleably, Willingly)."

Sign 41:11 bolsters the understanding of multiple layers or levels alluded to in Sign 44:10, inferred from the use of the word اسْتَوَى "astawa", and the inter alia nature of the smoke, that it is somehow associated with linking or connecting layers it is amongst.

The essential root of the word "astawa" is ساو "sawa" which means to equal, match, or 'get on the same level with' or 'reach the same rank or status'. The word "astawa" in the vernacular means to ripen, mature, become fully developed or evolve; typically it is used to mean having reached a stage ready for harvesting as well as having cognates meaning 'equal' or 'equalize'. In Sign 41:11 contextual inference also holds where "astawa" means 'direct attention to'. Arithmetically, the word entails equivalence; in other words, 'members of a set in reflexive, symmetrical, and transitive relation to each other'; that they share the same solution, or are correspondent.

That God is said to having then 'astawa ila sama wa hiya dukhan' can be understood on all these multiple levels; He Directed His Attention to the Sky, or Reached the Same Level as the Sky when it was Smoke (and since in my understanding God is Greater than His Creation that would mean He Came Down to the Level of the Sky and not Up); and further to this that God Became Equivalent to the Sky (not necesarily the Sky itself per se, but a Correspondent Entity to the Sky...).

Sign 41:11 continues with 'and He Said (Called on) to her (the Sky) and the Earth 'atati' Willingly/Voluntarily or Unwillingly/Forcibly...'

The imperative 'atati' is given, meaning 'Come!' or 'Derive!' (ie., that the Earth and Sky Come together and/or Derive one from the other) to which the Earth and the Sky 'respond' (here understood to mean 'perform' or 'do as told') "We 'atati-na' 'ttaw'an".

The manner of formation for the Earth/Sky system is encapsulated in their 'response', also to be understood on a number of levels. Having established the various meanings of 'tati' and its associated root 'tawi', as discussed above, the implication is that the formation of the Earth/Sky system was done 'Instantaneously' .

Further to this, their formation is described by the word طَوْعًا 'ttaw'a' meaning willing/willingly, the root of which طيع "ttay'_" indicates that the Earth/Sky system formed in a 'malleable' , 'pliable', 'docile', 'biddable', 'plastic' manner and not in the alternative unwilling كَرْهًا "karhan" or 'by force' manner.

This leads to the conclusion that the formation of the Earth and Sky (and by extension, the Universe) from the primordial 'Smoke' was not a 'Big Bang' at all, but something a bit more 'Manageable'.

Malleability is a significant factor in this formation since it is generally associated with metals and and if the Chapter number 41 is taken to be the number of nucleons in an element/isotope, it points to 2 metals that are key players in this Cosmic Dance, 41Ca and 41K. [For the persnickety set, the words 'plastic' and 'pliable' may also be referring to collisions, deformation, neuroplasticity, warping/bending and phenotype changes--just how far does the rabbit hole go?--as far down as you want to follow it.]

The Calcium (Group II Alkaline Earth Metal) isotope (41Ca), atomic mass 40.962 (effectively 41), is produced by the neutron activation of (40Ca) and has received much attention in stellar studies because it decays to 41K (Potassium 41), a critical indicator of solar-system anomalies. The K line is also associated with Iron (Fe) in astro-spectroscopy.

Spectral absorption lines in the Sun and stars are identified with individual chemical elements or compounds and the strength of the spectral lines indicates both the amount of the element emitting the line as well as the efficiency of absorption.

While Hydrogen dominates the Sun, it is ionized Calcium's absorption lines that dominate the solar spectrum even though there is 440 x10^3 times as much Hydrogen as Calcium (note the number coded in Sign 44:10; 44 *10=440). This is because Hydrogen has a low efficiency of absorption while that of ionized Calcium is very high.

The abundances of the atoms can be calculated from the strengths of the absorption lines and the chemical composition of the outer part of a star can then be ascertained. (Since the Sun is a ball of gas without a well-defined surface, it is the photosphere that is commonly referred to when speaking of the Sun's outer surface). Relative absorption line strengths can also be used to find temperatures and densities.

Since the verses mentioned here, 44:10, 44:56 and 41:11, all share a common theme (smoke and the formation of Earth and Sky, ie., the Universe) it is acceptable to scrutinize all the numbers encoded by them as a set.

The subset {54, 56} included in this Chapter:Verse set of numbers pertains to the element Iron (Fe), another key player in the Cosmic Dance. The 54 is given by Sign 44:10 (44+10=54) and is associated with the number of nucleons of the second most abundant stable Iron isotope found on Earth, 54Fe, which is radioactive and has a very long half-life (on the order 10^22) and the line number given by Sign 44:56 points to the most abundant stable Iron isotope 56Fe.

The isotope 56Fe is of interest to nuclear and astro physics since it is much more easily produced from lighter nuclei in nuclear reactions and it is the endpoint of fusion chains inside extremely massive stars which makes it common in the Universe relative to other metals.

The numeric relationships encoded in these Signs collectively call attention to the connection between Calcium, Potassium and Iron and their interwoven roles in the formation of the Universe. A brief rundown of the other numbers comprising the set associated with these Signs and their significance includes:

• 10 --as in Beryillium 10, (10Be) related to cosmic ray flux and indicates that the Sun undergoes prolonged periods of anomalous behavior in addition to its regular 11-year cycle
• 11--Boron 10 and Boron 11, the ratio (11B/10B) of which is used to determine pH in an aqueous environment
• 100 since 44+56=100, the ratio 44/56=79% the percent of Nitrogen (N) in air and 100-79=21 which is about the percent of O2 in air
• 41--41Ca, 41K
• 51--41+10; Radioactive isotope 51Cr used as a tracer in medical studies of blood cells and studying blood flow into and out of a fetus.
• 44-- Isotopes with 44 nucleons 44Cl, 44Ar, 44K, 44Ca, 44Sc, 44Ti, 44V, 44Cr
• 52 since 41+11=52 associated with 52Ca which is a neutron-rich Calcium isotope and Chromium 52, 52Cr, the most abundant Chromium isotope that is also radioactive and has a half-life less than 24 hours.

A relatively recent paper Fe I and Ca II K Lines in Quiet and Active Regions (of the photosphere) by Kucera, Brcekova, et al., and sponsored by ESA/NASA mentions finding that fluctuations in Fe I spectral absorption lines indicate changes between quiet and flaring regions of the photosphere and the fluctuations between quiet and plageous regions are small. (A plage is a bright region in the Sun's chromosphere, and plageous regions are typically found near sunspots). 

The authors find a correlation between the Fe I line and its relationship to the Ca II K line that 'there is no coupling between photosphere and chromosphere in quiet regions as there is no reflection of Fe I spectra lines acting in the Ca II K line centers, contrary to that plageous atmosphere is characterized by reaction of Ca II K lines intersecting to changes in Fe I line center ones; the intersections are shifted to higher values'.

(The chromosphere is a thin layer of the Sun's atmosphere that lies above the photosphere, and while it is farther away from the Sun's center than the photosphere it is inexplicably much hotter than the photosphere; spicules are a feature associated with the chromosphere and the chromosphere is sandwiched between the photosphere and the corona--things to keep in mind when looking for similars).

The 3933.7Å K and H lines can be used to determine the age of the Universe or the velocity other galaxies are moving away from ours. In each galaxy they are shifted toward a longer (redder) wavelength due to the galaxy's motion away from the Milky Way.

Knowing how much the K and H lines are shifted from a standardized, stationary source can be used to find that galaxy's velocity. These Sign values taken as wavelengths are all shifted longer than the K and H lines if they are understood to be taken as 4410, 4456 and 4111 (Angstroms Å ).

A Purist would be inclined to posit that the significance among these elements and values encoded in these interralated Signs would be expected to trickle down or propagate throughout the whole of Creation or reflect something in the nature of how we understand Reality that is worthy of remembering--in other words, they would take a Top-Down approach to how the System fits or works together.

In seeing how these elements behave in building the Cosmos it would be of interest to seek correlations of how these same players figure in their role closer to Earth. And, specifically, how everything observed is ultimately for the Benefit of Humanity.

In other words, look for similars (As Above, So Below) in everything and apply it to improve Mankind's condition (and by the same token, keep in mind that Mankind's key directive is caring for the Earth).

For example, Calcium and Potassium are among the major ions in seawater, noting that Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, Sr2+, Cl-, SO42- (sulfate), HCO3- (bicarbonate), Br-, B(OH)3 (boric acid), and F- account for almost all of the salt in seawater.

Ratios of major elemental ions remain constant, despite changes in salinity (about 35 g salts/1 litre seawater) and the percent by mass of Ca 0.04% and K 0.04% yield a Ca:K ratio of 1:1 (0.0102 Ca/ 0.0103 K molal composition (mol/kg)).

While the abundance (that of 41Ca) varies with depth, and in deep Pacific seawater is 440 ppm (the product of Sign 44:10, 44 *10=440)), the abundance of Potassium in seawater, by contrast, does not vary with depth. While both Calcium and Potassium are merely trace minerals in seawater their Ca:K balance is significant to coral reef health.

Potassium levels are important to good coloration in coral, and low K levels may lead to washed out coloration/graying or lead to stopping coral growth and/or necrosis.

Calcium provides the basis for calcification required by corals, mollusks, and algae for a variety of functions, including protection and body support, and it is hypothesized that the process of calcification itself may increase photosynthetic efficiency.

And calcium and other trace metals (such as Strontium) precipitate in the same ratios in many different coral species as the relative concentrations found in bulk seawater (such that the net effect is not readily detectable).

How these metals become incorporated into aragonite skeletons is especially important as the incorporation rate varies in a known fashion with temperature.

Understanding how corals incorporate these metals is an important aspect to exploiting the use of ancient corals as paleothermometers.

Chemical and biological oceanographers frequently analyze nutrient data with respect to the Redfield Ratios to determine which nutrient is the production-limiting nutrient. While Iron (Fe) is important in some regions, particularly open ocean regions distant from land, in most productive regions the limiting nutrient is either Nitrogen (N) or Phosphorous (P).

And while Calcium, Potassium and other trace metals in seawater contribute to thriving coral reefs, it has been demonstrated that enriched phosphate levels can significantly inhibit overall coral calcification and thereby adversely affect coral reef growth.

Correspondent to how the role Ca and K balance (and other trace minerals such as P and Fe, etc) contributes to thriving coral reefs in the Sea, clearly defined levels of Calcium and Potassium are closely linked to human health.

Calcium is used for bone formation and cell signaling and disturbances in Sodium, Potassium and Calcium levels is typically more serious than for other minerals in humans.

In many ways coral reefs in the Ocean are analogous to the brain in the Central Nervous System.

And the manner in which trace metal cations such as Ca and K contribute to the health of the coral in the Ocean is analogous to the brain and its vulnerability to either a deficit or an excess of these trace metals, in effect '...So Below'. And by extension, a talented spectroscopist may be able to draw some conclusions pertaining to how these same cations Ca and K, including Fe, behave in quiet and 'flaring' areas of the human brain (perhaps the pia mater/arachnoid/dura mater) based on relationships observed in the Sun's photosphere/chromosphere/carona spectral profile for these same elements, to plumb for the 'As Above...' correlation.

In the central nervous system, metallic cations are involved in oligodendrocyte maturation (oligodendrocytes are cells that coat axons in the central nervous system with their cell membrane forming a specialized membrane differentiation called myelin, which factors in providing insulation to the axon allowing electrical signals to propagate more efficiently) and myelinogenesis (myelinogenesis is the sequential growth and maturation of myelin sheaths which enable brain signals (neural signals) to propagate faster and with less signal loss), and metallic cations have been associated with pathogenesis, particularly multiple sclerosis and malignant gliomas; severe human pathologies as yet without efficient treatments.

Sign 57:25, may apply to these pathologies in that 57Fe is a minor stable Iron isotope which is closely associated with Mössbauer spectroscopy and the Iron-dependent enzyme RNR (ribonucleotide reductase is essential for DNA synthesis; or Rest And Relaxation, essential for averting insanity); in which case the 25 may be referring to 25–amino acid hepcidin (hepcidin 25).

Myelin is considered a defining characteristic of the (gnathostome or jawed) vertebrates, and myelination a key developmental stage in the human brain ('white matter'), continuing for at least another 10 to 12 years after birth; the rate of development of these brain structures is linked to the rate of development of related brain functions. And it is this association between metal cations, myelinogenesis and brain development in vertebrates that distinguishes them from invertebrates (like insects and worms).

The utilization of these cations in vertebrates and invertebrates differs at the most rudimentary levels.
The Ca and K ions diffuse through cell membranes but Fe is relatively insoluble. Iron and Calcium are required in vast amounts for hemoglobin and bone formation in humans; this contrasts markedly with insects that require them in only trace amounts. And phytophagous insects need relatively large amounts of Potassium and only trace amounts of Sodium, whereas humans and other vertebrates need these same minerals in reverse order.

Climate changes and ocean acidification can also affect coral reef health since calcium carbonate (used in calcification) is susceptible to dissolution in acidic conditions.

Foraminifera (or simply, foram) is a type of plankton that takes up Boron by accident while building their shells or tests out of calcium carbonate. Depending on how acidic their watery environs (related to how much CO2 there is in the atmosphere), foraminifera take up different proportions of the two available isotopes 10B and 11B (Boron 10 and Boron 11).

The ratio between the two Boron isotopes (11B/10B) yields the pH of the water in which the foram live, making them convenient bioindicators in assessing coastal coral reef health.

Climate changes occur during the Earth's lifecycle, and currently it is widely accepted that such changes have been accelerated due to increased CO2 in Earth's atmosphere (greenhouse effect).

There is a less widely accepted school of thought that changes in Earth's climate are a result of the Solar activity, specifically related to Sunspots.

Cosmegenic 10Be is produced by cosmic rays in the atmosphere, it has a relatively long half-life (about 1.36 million years) before decaying to 10B, and attaches readily to aerosols which then precipitate into the soil or get snowed out onto ice caps.

The production of 10Be is inversely proportional to Solar activity since the Solar wind decreases the flux of galactic cosmic rays that reach the Earth. It is assumed that more sunspots imply a more magnetically active Sun which then more effectively repels the galactic cosmic rays, in turn reducing their production of 10Be isotopes in the Earth's atmosphere.

This means that variations in the cosmic ray flux is recorded by 10Be in the ice core over time. 10Be isotopes in Greenland and Antarctic ice cores offer just such a terrestrial record of this Solar activity and the sunspot count can be deduced back to the year 850.

The decrease in Beryllium 10 since 1900 indicates a decrease in the cosmic ray flux over this period and that the solar magnetic flux has increased by almost a factor of 2 since 1900.
